Well, on Wednesday, October 13th, the crowd at the MoCADA did all three at the exhibit ” A Painting and a Poem for Haiti”!

Those present nurtured their soul and partied with the purpose of making a difference in the lives of many Haitian children with artwork, poetry by Michèle Voltaire Marcelin and music by Markus Schwartz and Monvelyno Alexis .
The event linked HaitianNation and MoCADA and proceeds from the evening benefited the Rural Haiti Project and the Haiti SOFTHOUSE Project.. Devoted to utilizing the visual arts as a medium to address, discuss and debate contemporary social, political, and economic issues that disproportionately affect the people of the African Diaspora, MoCADA strives to give a more accurate portrayal of the people whose experiences and cultural contributions have been marginalized throughout history.
Haitian Nation is a group of New Yorkers who are committed to make a difference for Haiti through artistic initiatives as a vehicle to inspire and transform tragedy into hope. The event, “A Painting and a Poem for Haiti”, is an art exhibition and silent art auction aimed at creating a global community to bring hope to the earthquake victims in Haiti and support the recovery and future of Haiti.

Laurie’s goal is to create a space where the arts of Brooklyn artists can be housed and treasured.
Michèle Voltaire Marcelin and Haitian American Architect and NOMA member, Rodney Leon, one of the designers of the HaitiSOFTHOUSE , a flexible and sustainable approach to shelter that provides immediate transitional housing, community development and reconstruction solutions.

Michèle Voltaire Marcelin is a poet/writer, performer and painter who was born and raised in Haiti, sojourned in Chile, and currently lives in the United States. The publication of her first novel “La Désenchantée” (CIDIHCA, Montréal-2006) was followed by its Spanish translation “La Desencantada” and two other books of poetry and prose: “Lost and Found” and “Amours et Bagatelles” (CIDIHCA, Montréal-2009) - translated into Spanish by Editorial ALBA as "Amores y cosas sin importancia" - all of which garnered rave reviews. Her writings are also featured in 3 anthologies published in France: "Cahier Haiti" (published by RAL'M-2009), "Terre de Femmes" (Editions Bruno Doucey-2011) "Revue Intranqu'îllités" (2012). She speaks and writes fluently French, English, Spanish and Haitian Creole. She has a BFA from the Leonard Davis Center for the Performing Arts at CUNY and a Masters from The New School for Social Research.
